With everything happening in society, this year’s Black History Month feels different. It’s not just about preserving Black history—it’s about actively shaping a future we can take pride in.

Throughout various industries, sectors, and communities, a few themes remain constant for Black people: Resilience, Perseverance, and Unapologetic Authenticity.

At this year’s Grammy Awards the biggest award of the night, Album of the Year, went to Beyoncé for act ii: Cowboy Carter. She is the first Black woman to win this century and follows Natalie Cole, Whitney Houston, and Lauryn Hill in the ‘90s. She also made history as the first Black woman to win Best Country Album.

Despite multiple nominations for her previous albums, I Am…Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé, Lemonade, and Renaissance, she had never before won an Album of the Year award, which people (myself included) argued was long overdue. Beyoncé’s resilience empowered her to persevere and create a genre-bending album that unapologetically honors Black artists’ contributions to country music.

When I think about how I can make a positive impact, I draw inspiration from the greatness that has come before me – and use it as motivation to leave my own mark on the world.

For anyone who may need a little encouragement this month and beyond, here is a Black History Month Watch List (my personal favorite on this list is “A Thousand and One”).
