Three Anniversaries in Six Days: Turning Milestones into Momentum
Over six days recently, Mazur & Co had the opportunity to support three very different mission-driven client anniversary events. Amid the crush of speaker prep, event logistics, media outreach, and panel coordination, we started thinking about anniversaries in general.
Why do they matter? And more importantly: why should anyone outside your organization (or immediate family) care?
The reality is that the organizations people rally around most during milestone moments are rarely the ones simply celebrating longevity. They’re the ones using anniversaries as an opportunity to reconnect people to purpose, impact, and possibility.
Anniversaries matter deeply to the people closest to them. Adam and I are getting ready to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, and while that milestone feels meaningful to us (and hopefully our family and friends!), most people outside our immediate circle probably aren’t counting down the days. Organizational anniversaries work much the same way. Internal meaning doesn’t automatically translate into broader engagement.
The organizations that do anniversaries especially well understand how to create moments that invite people in and move them to action.
Give People Something to Talk About
One example of an organization that has mastered this is United WE.
Their recent Champions for Change event at CPKC Stadium wasn’t simply a celebration of 35 years. It was an experience intentionally designed to reinforce the organization’s mission and values. The event brought together leaders from sports, business, and media in a setting that itself told a story: the first stadium in the world purpose-built for a women’s professional sports team.
With buzz-worthy speakers and Instagrammable visuals, United WE created more than a fundraising breakfast – they created a cultural moment. With a thousand in person attendees and more tuning in online, this was an event that people will remember for years to come. Watch the video of the event.

Tell a Bigger Story
At Legal Services of Eastern Missouri’s 70th anniversary celebration, the most powerful moment of the evening didn’t come from a timeline slide or a list of accomplishments.
It came from a client.
Linda Daily – a St. Louis mother of 11 – shared the story of fighting her landlord’s illegal attempts to force her family from their home, and winning because someone stood beside her and helped her navigate the legal system.
The message wasn’t simply that the organization had existed for 70 years.
It was that for 70 years, people facing impossible situations found someone willing to fight for them.
The strongest anniversary moments rarely focus on the institution itself. They focus on the humans whose lives were changed because the institution existed. Watch the video.

Don’t Just Look Back – Look Forward
We saw this again while supporting Chicago-based IFF’s anniversary event in St. Louis this month.
The celebration highlighted 20 years of investment and partnership in Missouri, including more than $225 million in loans supporting 290 nonprofit and public projects statewide. But the conversation itself focused largely on the future: the evolving needs of St. Louis communities, the role of nonprofit and civic partnerships, and what becomes possible when funders, CDFIs, and community leaders work together intentionally. Check out this recap.

The organizations that handle anniversaries most effectively understand something important:
The anniversary itself is not the story.
It’s the opportunity to tell one.
This month, we were reminded that the most meaningful anniversaries celebrate the past AND build momentum for the future. Cheers!
