On 314 Day, the Mazur & Co. team gathered to celebrate the St. Louis tradition at a beloved institution–the St. Louis Zoo–and held our first-ever team retreat. Our team typically facilitates retreats for clients, but this time we organized one for ourselves. I had the pleasure of planning our retreat and wanted to share some tips that we think all great in-person retreats need:
- Align around realistic goals. Put some thought into what you want to accomplish and develop an agenda that advances those goals. The time will always go by faster than you think, so prioritization is key!
- Use a third-party facilitator. An outside facilitator can help bring an unbiased perspective and create a safe space for tough conversations. Susan Conrad was our facilitator, and she was amazing!
- Survey your team in advance. Ensure your retreat is inclusive of people’s needs and is set up for success.
- Set expectations and provide details beforehand. Team members may be curious about specifics leading up to the retreat. We suggest creating a comprehensive memo for the retreat, detailing the specifics about the day(s) so that the team knows what to expect.
- Take plenty of pictures. Since your team is all in one place, that time may be good to gather assets for your company website and future social posts.
- Have plenty of breaks and snacks – and don’t forget to have fun! Remember that some of the most valuable conversations your teammates will have are the informal interactions that happen outside the facilitated sessions. Make sure to build in plenty of breaks and keep your team nourished, hydrated, and comfortable so they can focus throughout the retreat.
With these tips, we are sure your retreat can be as enjoyable and impactful as ours was. If you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out!

In March, we celebrated Chanelle Zak on reaching her 5-year milestone here at Mazur & Co.! We are grateful for Chanelle’s hard work and for being such a valued part of our team, and we were excited to toast🥂 with her in person at our retreat.
