At Mazur & Co., November is one of our favorite months—and not just because it’s Scorpio season. It’s National Career Development Month, an opportunity to highlight the steps we can all take to grow our careers, support others on their journeys, and expand economic opportunity for everyone.
Many of us grew up thinking our career choices were fixed: that you pick a lane early and stay there. But the truth is, careers evolve, and so do we. I checked the record and so far I’ve had 13 jobs(!) since graduating college (not counting my glory days waiting tables on the Upper West Side). My fellow former political operatives can relate, and this kind of career fluidity is fast becoming the norm across all industries.
That means we all need to cultivate resilient, growth-oriented mindsets that help us navigate change with confidence rather than fear. A few ways to celebrate National Career Development Month:
- Take a free assessment, like The DeBruce Foundation’s Agile Work Profiler©. It’s quick, insightful, and a great starting point for understanding your strengths.
- Consider becoming a mentor. You don’t have to be a CEO to offer guidance, sometimes the best support comes from someone just a few steps ahead.
- Strengthen your network. Reconnect with old colleagues, attend an event, or reach out to someone you admire.
- Commit to ongoing learning. A workshop, webinar, new certification, or a book can open unexpected doors and keep your skills fresh.

Career advice is a regular topic in our internal huddles, and one of our favorite recent gems came from Mindy: “Focus on outcome, not ego.” It’s a grounding reminder in a world that often celebrates the opposite.
We’d love to hear from you: What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received? Share it with us—we’ll compile our favorites in next month’s edition.
In the meantime, don’t go anywhere: read on for more timely updates (and jobs!) from our clients and allies, our inaugural Mazur & Co. holiday gift guide, plus clips we’re proud of—like this fantastic profile of local CDFI IFF and its leader Stephen Westbrooks, a commentary from United WE on new research on child care access in Arkansas, and the ways Maryville University and Saint Louis University are teaming up to prepare the next generation of cyber defenders.

🍹For travel: Bose headphones, a tripod selfie stick, and for anyone taking a cruise, heed Jarrett’s wise words: “Get the drink package!”
🐈 No surprise, we’re pet lovers, so we have a few recommendations for your fur family: this helpful gadget that Rachel recommends, the best pet dry shampoo that works wonders on Chanelle’s adorable but occasionally stinky pup, and for people with cat allergies (and those of us who love them), a bottle of cat dander remover that works.
🛏️Gifts for getting cozy: curl up with a heated blanket or on a jumbo bean bag chair, queue up a classic film on the Criterion Collection, or just tune out the world with Loop earplugs.
⚜️Our fav STL experience gifts: Mindy spreads the STL love with gifts for memberships to the St. Louis Zoo, Grant’s Farm, or Missouri Botanical Garden, and for the really lucky ones, a gluten free gooey butter cake that’s just as good as the original.
💄Look great, feel great: A few of us are obsessed with watches that actually work, and Kelsey recommends a basic digital Timex. Camille recommends gifting a Barre class, and bringing a friend.
🛍️Merch! Show your solidarity with the District with some Free DC merch (note the cropped women’s T runs small!) or give the gift of career literacy with an Agilities T-shirt.
🙏Channing plans to say thanks with beautiful stationery from KC-based May Day Paper & Post, which delivers all year round.
